| When we refer to investment
gems, we mainly refer to unheated gems. A potential
buyer should always insist on a gemmological certificate issued
by a well-known gemmological laboratory when considering the purchase
of a ruby of substantial value.
Like diamonds, rubies are graded by using the 4 C's (colour,
cut, clarity and carat weight) to evaluate their value. However,
in their evaluation colour and clarity are more important than
the other characteristics ( see Rubies Burma).
The ruby, above all other gemstones, has been admired throughout
the centuries and its name Sanskrit "ratnanâyaka"
means "The Leader of precious Stones". Throughout
history it has been credited with a large number of beneficial
properties. Rubies were also believed to guarantee that one's
status and possessions would never be taken. Wearing rubies
was to signify manhood, nobility and valour in a man, and pride
and passion in a woman.
