| Top-quality
rubies from the Mogok areas are as red as you can imagine,
a saturated pure red without any overtones of brown, blue or orange.
The intensity of colour of a fine Mogok ruby is like a glowing
coal, due to a phenomenon called fluorescence, probably the most
intensely coloured substance our ancestors had ever laid eye on.
The top colour in a Mogok ruby is commonly called "Pigeon
blood".
These natural (unheated) gems are incredibly rare, highly sought
after and of course demand top prices.
Top quality Mogok rubies of 1 carat size are available from $
2.500 - $ 10.000 per carat
2 carat size gems are available from $ 4.000 - $ 20.000 per carat
3 carat size gems range between $10.000 - $ 35.000 per carat
Gems of 5 carat or more can easily demand $50.000 or more per
carat.
The highest total price ever paid for an unheated Burma ruby in
public auction was $ 4.620.000 for a 32.08 carats cushion-shape
($ 144.015 per carat) sold in 1989.
The highest price per carat ever paid for an unheated Burma ruby
in public auction was $ 227.300 for a 15.97 carats cushion-shape
( $ 3.630.000 total-price ) sold in 1988.
About 15 years ago a new mine, called Mong Hsu,
was discovered. This mine, located some 60 miles south of Mogok
today produces big quantities of rubies. However, the vast
majority of Mong Hsu stones has to be heat treated to develop
the beautiful red colour. In addition due to the heating-process,
the tiny fractures present in nearly all Mong Hsu stones are filled
with a glassy substance, called borax. Depending on the quantity
of those fillings, these stones must be called treated (T).
All well-known gemmological laboratories, like Gübelin, SSEF,
GRS (Switzerland), AGL, AGTA (USA) or CCIP ( France) will eventually
include those treatments in their certificates.
We would like to make it clear that when talking about substantial
investments in rubies we only refer to the "classic"
Mogok gem, that means unheated Mogok stones of good to fine quality.
Due to its beauty and rarity we consider fine unheated Mogok-
rubies as a prime choice when investing in gemstones.
