Depending on their quality, the cost of Burmese sapphires is generally
pitched between Sri Lanka and Kashmir stones. Burmese sapphires
of 1 carat size are available from $1.000- $3.500 per carat, while
2 to 4 carat stones are available from $2.500- $ 5.000 per carat.
Bigger stones go up to $ 25.000 or more per carat.
Collectors contend that Burma will eventually reach price parity
with Kashmir sapphires.
Recently sold Burmese sapphires include the world famous Rockefeller
sapphire, a superb rectangular shaped gem of 62.02 carats, sold
for $ 3.031.000 ( $ 48.871 per carat),
a spectacular rectangular shaped gem of 58.97 carats, sold for
$ 1.520.209 ( $ 25.779 per carat)
and a magnificent rectangular shaped gem of 25.76 carats, sold
for $ 763.649 total ($ 29.645 per carat). All pieces were sold
in public auction.
Burmese sapphires of good quality are very rare, but can still
be found today, making these gems a perfect yet affordable investment
stone.
